Neos In The Spotlight

By Michelle Porter

O

ur neophytes have been very busy since their induction into our Sisterhood this past November. One busy neo is Soror Sharon D. Autrey, CPS/CAP who is currently studying at Roosevelt University to achieve a Master’s Degree in Public Administration with a Non-Profit focus.  Soror Autrey is an Office Manager for the American Society for Healthcare Engineering.

Soror Autrey was drawn to Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. when she met sorors at a university function. According to Autrey; “There was a certain passion in how they (sorors) spoke of the organization that made me want to know more. There was genuineness in the way they were sharing information with me.  I knew I wanted to be a part of THAT organization”.

Soror Autrey is not new to community service.  She and her co-workers painted a Southside grammar school and its playground. The classrooms were made brighter with welcoming colors. On the playground she assisted with painting hopscotch squares and a map of the United States.  Soror Autrey was pleased to hear the students loved their updated school.

Soror Autrey described her heartfelt feelings about the induction ceremony; “I thought the induction was very reverent and filled with historical tradition.  This confirmed for me that the organization’s long history was to be taken seriously and to heart”.

New Member Updates

Soror Lawanda Mahomes graduated from Concordia University in December 2011 with a degree in Curriculum and Instruction and with a Degree of Master of Arts. With her degree, she hopes to one day to publish a Math Textbook and open her very own Tutoring Center.

Soror Mahomes teach Middle School Students and feels that some of them need that one on one attention.  Soror Mahomes can definitely benefit from advice from our sorors who are veteran teachers.  We salute another Soror who has joined the profession of education.

Sorors Centra Lee and Nico Thigpen are truly on “Fire To Serve” this sorority year. These Neos come to Delta Sigma Chapter as life-long friends who share a passion for community service. Soror Lee is a school teacher who was drawn to Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. commitment to providing service to the community.  Soror Lee has volunteered for several years with the Glass Slipper Project which provides prom dresses, shoes and other essentials

for high school students.  Similarly, Soror Thigpen recalls what drew her to Sigma Gamma Rho; “I joined Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. to become part of a sisterhood that was more than talk but a sisterhood that is about action. I wanted to be a part of an organization that was rich in community service involvement”  For the past eight years Soror Thigpen has volunteered with the  Lafayette Plaza Housing Cooperative on their back to school book bag/supplies giveaway and the school uniform giveaway.

Both sorors recently recalled their feelings at their induction ceremony.  According to Soror Centra Lee, “My induction was a very emotional and nervous experience for me.  After I realized that I was actually attending my Induction it was a very bitter-sweet but humbling experience for me”.  Soror Nico Thigpen admits to also being nervous but also described her perceptions of the ceremony as “a sacred event”. We welcome Sorors Lee and Thigpen into Delta Sigma Chapter and look forward to their continued hard work and dedication to the community.

“Red Tails”: Saluting Our Tuskegee Airmen

             By Traci Nixon

On January 22, 2012 the Delta Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. and the Harvey/Markham Alumnae Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Co-sponsored a movie event “Red Tails” at the Chatham Theatre. The event drew in a crowd of over 65 attendees, along with the Chicago Chapter of the Tuskegee Airmen.  The airmen greeted guests and completed a presentation before the showing, which acknowledge their careers and accomplishments over the years. Before and after the showing of the movie the airmen signed autographs, took pictures, along with completing interviews to the local news media. The purpose for the event was to bring awareness to the community of the service the following individuals provided to our country, while serving as America’s first black military aviators. The movie highlighted the intensity of African-Americans service, as well as their dedication  in the field of aviation.

Central Regional Conference Reminders

By Soror Denise Fussell and Soror Michelle Porter

Next month Delta Sigma Chapter will attend the 72nd Central Regional Conference in Dearborn, Michigan.  The host chapter, Rho Sigma, is home to our Regional Syntaktes Soror Pamela Kadirifu and former Regional Syntaktes and Legend Frances Jackson, PhD.

In an effort to prepare for the 72nd Central Regional Conference, we thought it might be best to highlight several protocols that were given to sorors last year in Cincinnati. These protocols were listed in the 71st Central Regional Conference Handbook.  These protocols

are gentle reminders of sorority and conference expectations.

While these highlights may not address all questions, we hope they will provide some insight into Sigma Etiquette.      Please be reminded for all Sorors attending the Omega Rho Ceremony, the attire is uninterrupted white.

Civic Committee in the News

By Michelle Porter

The Civic and National Projects Committee, under the leadership of Soror Kirsten Alley has been “On Fire to Serve” this sorority year.

As with years past, the Civic Committee has embodied the Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. slogan, “Greater Service, Greater Progress”.  Here are just a few of the functions sponsored by the Civic Committee this year:

The Hattie McDaniel Breast Cancer Awareness Project, Project Reassurance and Cradle Care, Matthew House Food Drive and Area 4 and 5 combined Christmas Celebration.

The Civic Committee is working hard to prepare for Africare later this month. The Africare chairperson is Soror Lucretia Douthet who promises an eventful evening that will not only highlight

the HIV-AIDS crisis in Africa and entertain audience members.

The Africare committee received an award for their program last year.

The chapter salutes the hard work of our Civic and National Programs Chairs.
